Access to the staircase of an office building had been diverted as a result of structural alterations in the 1960s to incorporate a porter's lodge, which is today no longer in use. The client's instructions were to restore the former entrance configuration, which ran in a straight line and was symmetrical, but avoiding the character of a restoration of formerly existing structures, to create an entrance appropriate to contemporary needs.
The plinth of the external façade is quoted in the stone-faced interior walls, and the stairs extend upwards like a bridge. The visitor steps out of the 'basin-like' ambience of the entrance situation and enters the actual area of access via swinging glass doors on the upper level.
